LAST OF THE BUTTERFLIES FINDS OFFICIAL PROTECTION - October 29, 1997

The last remaining colony of Brenton Blue butterflies in the world will be protected in a nature reserve.

Environment Minister Dr Pallo Jordan said in Parliament yesterday the nature reserve at Brenton near Knysna would be declared as soon as the land was transferred to the state.

There was a public outcry last year when the vegetation where the butterflies live was to be ploughed up for a housing development. This led Jordan to evoke legislation to halt the development - the first time this has been done.
